Laser Hair Removal

Tired of shaving? Tired of waxing? Try laser hair removal!

Unwanted hair or hair in areas where you don’t want it can be bothersome and unsightly. There are many hair removal methods available today, but if we go back 10 years, laser hair removal might have been a less popular option. This was due to the high cost, limited understanding of laser devices, and the fact that laser hair removal technology was still under development. As a result, other hair removal methods were more popular, such as shaving, waxing, hair removal creams, or plucking, because they were quick, convenient, and much less expensive than permanent laser hair removal.

Shaving, Waxing, or Laser Hair Removal: Which Method is Best?

When it comes to hair removal these days, there are so many options available. Shaving and waxing might be considered outdated by many women, as laser hair removal technology has significantly improved. Laser treatments are now more effective, faster, less painful, and have fewer potential side effects. With increased development and competition, the cost of these newer technologies has also decreased, making laser hair removal a more popular choice, surpassing traditional methods. It’s widely known that shaving, waxing, and other hair removal methods only provide temporary results.  Laser hair removal, on the other hand, delivers energy to destroy the hair roots and reduce regrowth.

How Many Types of Hair Removal Lasers Are There?

When it comes to laser hair removal technology, there are several options available. However, the three most popular and widely recognized for their effectiveness in permanent hair removal are Alexandrite Laser (755 nm), Diode Laser (808 nm), and YAG Laser (1064 nm). Each type of laser differs in wavelength, measured in nanometers, which determines the depth of penetration.

All laser hair removal systems work on a similar principle: delivering energy to destroy hair follicles and roots, preventing future hair growth. The longer the wavelength, the deeper the laser can reach to target the hair follicle. However, deeper penetration also increases the risk of heat accumulation, which may affect surrounding tissues and increase the chance of skin burns.

Diode Yag Laser, the hair removal technology that combines the best of both worlds, removes hair without the risk of burns.

Diode Yag Laser, the hair removal technology that combines the best of both worlds, removes hair without the risk of burns.

Asian skin is different from European or American skin. Since lasers target pigment, it used to be very risky to get laser hair removal for people with darker skin tones. However, technology has advanced significantly, making it a safe and effective option for people with all skin tones.

Diode Yag Laser combines these two powerful hair removal lasers to deliver energy that destroys both the hair root and hair shaft simultaneously. This makes Diode Yag Laser hair removal more effective, less painful, and eliminates the risk of burns.

Things to Know Before Getting Laser Hair Removal

To get the best results from laser hair removal, there are a few things you should know. Following these guidelines will not only ensure effective hair removal but also reduce the risk of skin irritation.

  1. Avoid plucking, waxing, or any hair removal method that removes the hair root. Laser hair removal is ineffective without the hair root. You should avoid these methods for at least two weeks before your treatment. It’s best to avoid plucking or waxing altogether during your laser hair removal course. Shaving is acceptable if hair grows back in between sessions.

  2. Avoid direct sunlight for at least 1-2 weeks before and after treatment. Sun exposure can darken your skin and increase the heat absorbed by the laser, which can be harmful to the surrounding tissue and skin cells. This can lead to burns or skin damage. If you must be in the sun, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

  3. Avoid scrubbing or exfoliating the area to be treated. If you have a spa appointment for a scrub, reschedule it for a few days after your laser treatment. Exfoliating can make your skin more sensitive, increasing the risk of irritation or inflammation from the laser.

  4. Avoid using whitening deodorant. Some whitening deodorants contain active ingredients that lighten the skin by exfoliating it. Since your skin will be sensitive after laser treatment, you should avoid these products for at least 2-3 days.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure a safe and effective laser hair removal experience. However, it’s always best to consult with a qualified professional to discuss any specific concerns or questions you may have.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful? How Many Sessions Are Needed?

Laser technology has advanced significantly, making the treatment less painful. However, the level of discomfort varies from person to person. Factors such as hair thickness influence how much heat is absorbed, leading to different sensations during the procedure.

Each laser hair removal session can only target hair in its active growth phase, which accounts for about 20% of the total hair in the treated area. Since the hair growth cycle lasts approximately 28 days, effective hair removal requires at least 5-10 sessions, performed every 3-4 weeks, to achieve long-term results.

However, individual factors such as hair type, age, hormones, and skin tone also impact the effectiveness of the treatment. As a result, the number of sessions needed and the outcomes may vary. With consistent treatment, hair gradually becomes finer and eventually disappears.

Is Laser Hair Removal Expensive?

Because laser hair removal is so popular, technology has advanced significantly, and many laser hair removal methods have been developed. The current price per session is much lower compared to waxing. While the cost per session may not be significantly different, laser hair removal usually requires only 5-10 sessions to achieve long-lasting results. This means the hair may not grow back at all, or only a few thin hairs may appear within 1-2 years. If hair does reappear, you can always get additional laser treatments.
